What does our experience of problems depend upon?

Other people?  Our job?  Money?

In fact if we check we will see that our experience of problems actually depends upon our feelings.  Sometimes we can have difficult external conditions and yet not be unhappy!  Doesn’t this prove that whether we are happy or miserable depends upon how we feel and not on the external conditions.  Through developing this understanding in our heart we can begin to put into practice the methods taught in modern Buddhism to enable us to choose states of mind that lead to happiness, a joyful feeling in the mind and abandon states of mind that lead to unhappiness, an unpleasant feeling in the mind.  Only through this can we begin to transform our lives and enjoy the peace and happiness we have always been looking for.

“When things go wrong in our life and we encounter difficult situations, we tend to regard the situation itself as our problem, but in reality whatever problems we experience come from the mind. If we were to respond to difficult situations with a positive or peaceful mind they would not be problems for us; indeed, we may even come to regard them as challenges or opportunities for growth and development. Problems arise only if we respond to difficulties with a negative state of mind. Therefore, if we want to be happy all the time and to be free from problems, we must develop and maintain a peaceful mind. Sufferings, problems, worries, unhappiness and pain all exist within our mind; they are all unpleasant feelings, which are part of the mind. Through controlling and purifying our mind we can stop them once and for all”.  From How to Transform Your Life by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

This workshop also presents the perfect opportunity to learn to meditate, or for those already meditating, to enhance their practice.
